Wash Your Car with the Right Soap
Dish soap is usually a go-to for many drivers looking to clean their car, but it’s not actually the best choice. Yes, it will remove dirt, grease, and old wax, but its powerful degreasing agents can also suck the essential oils right out of your paint job. That will lead to premature color fading.
You can find a cleaner formulated for vehicles at your local auto parts store. Once you mix the suds, fill a designated rinse bucket, and use it frequently to prevent scratching.
Pluck the Finish to get a Deep Clean
Your vehicle’s clear coat deflects most of the debris that hits your car out on the road, but small, sharper particles can get imbedded into the paint job. You can remove this grit with a clay bar kit. It includes a lubricating spray and several pieces of synthetic clay.
Break off a piece of clay and flatten it into a small pancake that fits into the palm of your hand. Rub it over the paint with a back-and-forth motion, and fold the clay against itself, knead it, and flatten it again until it turns gray. Repeat these steps until you get that glass-like shine.
Tips for Polishing Your Car
Polishing your car is a key step if you want it to really shine. The pros never skip it. It removes small surface imperfections and buffs the finish to a shine. An orbital car polisher makes the job simple, so it’s well worth a trip to the hardware store.
Apply a dollop of polish to the pad and wipe it across a 2x2-foot area of the vehicle. Run the polisher at a slow speed to spread out the compound. Then, boost the speed and let the polisher do the rest of the work for you.
How to Get a Mirror Finish with Synthetic Wax
Synthetic polymer wax, also known as paint sealant, will help you get a mirror finish. It won’t leave a white film behind like carnauba wax.
Apply the wax to a foam applicator and rub it into the finish with a swirling motion. Then, use a microfiber towel to wipe off the haze. One clever trick you should try: Swap in a clean towel as soon as the first one loads up with wax.
Tips for Cleaning Car Interiors: Work Your Way from the top Down
A lot of people like to start cleaning their vehicle’s interior by shampooing the carpet. It’s the most tedious task, and most just want to get it over with, but that will only result in you knocking all the crud from up above back down onto the carpet.
We like to start on the upper surfaces first. Vacuum the headliner, dashboard, console, and door panels. Then move to the glass, and all the other nooks and crannies. Sweep the dust out of every crack with a detailing brush and catch everything right away with your vacuum.
Tips for Cleaning Car Leather
When cleaning stains out of leather upholstery, start by pretreating with a leather conditioner. Apply stain remover to the pretreated leather and let it sit for about 30 seconds. Wipe it off with a clean cloth and finish the job by applying leather protection cream.
If your vehicle has leather upholstery, tackling spills and other messes right away is the best trick you can employ. Keep a leather-cleaning kit in the vehicle, so it’s on hand. Things like lipstick, ink, and dye from clothing can set into leather in as little as 24 hours.
How to Deep Clean Your Car Carpets
A carpet cleaning machine is key to getting that deep clean you’re looking for. It sprays the carpet with a solution of water and cleaner, and then sucks the dirt and grime into a reservoir. It really helps pull out the deep dirt that settles into the fibers of the carpet.
Quick cleaning tip: Remember to slide the seats all the way forward and all the way back. You will be surprised how dirty it can get underneath your car’s seats.
