Chevrolet Silverado: A Brief History

2018 Chevy Silverado

The Chevy Silverado was introduced as a trim for the classic C/K pickup in 1975, but it didn't hit showrooms as a standalone model until 1999. With a more aerodynamic design, the truck was introduced as a new take on the modern-day pickup. Plus, it featured a lineup of V8 engines, generating all the power and capabilities you need to get the job done.

Since then, the Silverado continued to adapt to the changing times while providing a stronger performance with each new generation. In 2004, Chevy even introduced a hybrid powertrain to the truck to give drivers both the power they want and the fuel economy they need.

Today, this truck is considered one of the best pre-owned models on the market. Engineered for long-lasting dependability and performance, a variety of used Silverado pickups are still running smoothly and towing efficiently today.

Used Chevy Silverado Performance Specs

The first-generation Silverado from 1999 to 2006 included a few engines, including V6 and V8 options. In 2003, there was also a 6.0L V8 that got 345 horsepower. If you're searching for fuel economy, the 2004 Silverado also offered a hybrid powertrain complete with a 5.3L V8 engine.

Used Silverado pickups from 2007 to 2013 were a part of the second generation. Along with engines from the previous model year, Chevy also added a 6.2L V8 that generated 403 horsepower. The V8s for this generation also included cylinder deactivation, an innovative performance feature that optimizes engine operation for enhanced fuel economy.

Third-generation Chevy Silverado models starting in 2014 offered engines that are just as powerful as its predecessor. However, this model year was the start of the brand's focus on power and fuel economy, so it included more performance technologies, such as direct injection, to further boost fuel efficiency.

All model year options also have the capabilities needed for the job site. Most used trucks will be able to 10,700 pounds when properly equipped. Need to tow something heavier? Pre-owned Silverado trucks starting in 2014 are designed to tow up to 12,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Cab Configurations and Bed Options

2018 Chevy Silverado Specs

With multiple configurations and bed options, a pre-owned Silverado makes it easy to find the truck that's perfect for your specific needs.

Almost all model years offer three cab configurations. If you're planning on having your Silverado be a powerful towing machine and a capable family hauler, you'll want to go with the extended cab (or double cab for newer models) or crew cab. Both have seating for up to around five or six, depending on the model year and trim level, and they each come with ample passenger space and legroom, so even the tallest passengers can ride with comfort. If you're looking to maximize cargo, you may want to consider the regular cab. It has enough room for two to three passengers, but it's spacious enough inside so you'll be able to stretch out easily during those long drives.

A used Silverado also has a few available bed sizes. Older models can come with one of three boxes. The smallest is a 5-foot, 8-inch short box. The standard size is a 6-foot, 6-inch. Finally, there's the long box, which comes in at 8 feet. Newer models from the third generation are only available with the short box or the long box.

Truck Bed & Towing Features

As one of the best used trucks on the market, it's no surprise that Chevy Silverado models come with a versatile truck bed and advanced towing features for your convenience.

Whenever you need to tow anything, you can count on the available integrated trailer brake controller to keep your cargo stable while you're behind the wheel. Some model years can also come with tow-haul mode as well as Trailer Sway Control for added stability.

A used Silverado offers multiple truck bed feature options, as well, to make your life on the road a little easier. Here are a few of the features you can get listed below, depending on the model year:

  • EZ-Lift tailgate
  • Locking tailgate
  • Tie-down hooks
  • CornerStep bumper

Chevy Silverado Interior Technologies

2018 Chevy Silverado Technology

On top of a capable performance and job-ready features, the Chevrolet Silverado is known for having innovative interior technologies. To help you stay entertained, many model years of the truck have an infotainment system complete with navigation and satellite radio. You can also find an option with heated front seats in the cab for a comfortable ride during those chilly mornings.

Used Silverado trucks can come with advanced safety features for your peace of mind, too. A rearview camera can give you a better look at your surroundings as you're backing out to ensure safety while a safety cage and airbags in the cab can keep you and everyone onboard protected.

More recent models have Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and other driver-assist technologies for added peace of mind.
