As one of the best used SUVs on the market, a Ford Explorer is made for versatility. It's spacious and dependable enough for the family; powerful enough to handle all your towing needs; and capable enough to be a top off-road SUV.

No matter what model year you choose, it's clear that a used Ford Explorer has a lot to offer. If you want to learn more about this impressive SUV and everything you can look forward to when you get behind the wheel, check out Val-U-Line®'s in-depth review below.

Engine Options

Used Ford Explorer Powerful Engine

The Ford Explorer has featured a number of different engines under the hood. From 2006 to 2010, it came with two engine options: a 210-horsepower 4.0L V6 and a 292-horsepower 4.6L V8. In 2011, the SUV came with a single 3.5L V6 that generated 290 horsepower.

From there, Ford began to introduce its EcoBoost® engines as a way for drivers to experience both power and efficiency in an SUV. The 2012 Explorer came with a 2.0L 4-cylinder EcoBoost® engine, and it got 240 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 28 MPG highway. For even more power, another EcoBoost® V6 engine was added to the powertrain options in 2013. This produced up to 365 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 22 MPG highway.

On top of that, a used Ford Explorer includes an array of performance technologies for a smoother and more capable ride. Available all-wheel drive can ensure stability as well as enhanced control and handling in any terrain, while a sport-tuned suspension creates a more comfortable overall ride.

Used Ford Explorer Interior

The Explorer has always been a sizeable SUV, so no matter which model year choose, you're sure to get a car that has all the space and storage you need. It offers three rows with seating for seven, and each row has more than enough legroom to ensure a comfortable experience for everyone onboard.

Need to haul a bit of cargo? A pre-owned Explorer has space for that, too. Starting in 2011, this SUV offers about 21 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 43.8 cubic feet behind the second row, and 80.7 cubic feet behind the first row.

Best of all, the interior of this used Ford SUV is packed with features designed to keep you comfortable and entertained, especially during those long family road trips. Depending on the model year selected, a few of these amenities can include:

  • An available infotainment system with smartphone connectivity and navigation
  • Optional heated and cooled front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

Cutting-Edge Used SUV Safety

Used Ford Explorer Technology Features

If safety is a top priority for your next used car, you'll want to go with a Ford Explorer. With a variety of cutting-edge safety features, you can confidently keep your mind at ease when you're behind the wheel.

Older model years have stability systems for control in slippery situations as well as advanced airbags for protection. In 2011, the brand introduced driver-assist technologies with the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) and Adaptive Cruise Control to the SUV.

Newer model years of the Ford Explorer also offer optional Collision Warning with Brake Support. Using sensors located on the front of the vehicle, the system monitors the distance between you and the car ahead. If the vehicle suddenly slows or if you get too close, the system will alert you and precharge the brakes to help you slow down and stop.
