Used vs Certified Pre-Owned

Used vs Certified Pre-Owned Cars

Traditional used cars and certified pre-owned vehicles are technically both pre-owned cars, but there are a few unique differences that may influence which one you choose. What are they? Our team at Val-U-Line® is here to help you find out!

This guide to used vs. certified pre-owned will go over all the details, so you can decide which is best for you!

What Is a Certified Pre-Owned Car?

Certified Pre-Owned Inventory

Certified pre-owned (CPO) cars are used vehicles that are backed by the manufacturer. They will have no more than 60,000 to 80,000 miles on the odometer, depending on the manufacturer’s standards. On top of that, they must be less than five to seven model years old.

When a dealership acquires a vehicle through a trade-in or lease return that also meets the manufacturer’s CPO criteria, they will put it through an inspection. The components they check are predetermined by the manufacturer, and if one is broken it will be replaced.

They will also examine a vehicle history report to ensure it has no reported accidents. Plus, most CPO programs only accept vehicles that have had one owner.

Pros and Cons of Buying Certified Pre-Owned

The biggest advantage to buying a CPO car is the manufacturer’s warranty. The amount of coverage provided depends on the manufacturer. In most cases, it will protect major vehicle components for at least a year.

If you want the power of choice, however, used cars are the way to go. CPO vehicles can only be sold at that manufacturer’s dealership. When you shop at a used car dealer, you will have a vast selection of years, makes, and models to choose from. You’re sure to find one that fits your lifestyle.

Another con to buying CPO is the cost. If you’re looking to save some money, it will be easy to find a cheap used car. You can expect to pay more for a CPO car. You may also have to pay for that warranty up front.

Benefits of Buying Used

Used Car Buying Benefits

You will have more control over your car-buying journey when you buy a traditional used car. There are no mileage or model year limitations, so you’ll be able to get behind the wheel of any vehicle that catches your eye. Most traditional used cars come with a CARFAX® Vehicle History Report™, so you can make sure you’re getting a high-quality ride.

The used cars at our dealerships must pass a rigorous safety inspection. We have ASE-certified technicians examine 360 points of the vehicle. That’s more extensive than some CPO programs. Our used cars have also undergone a state inspection, so you can be sure the emissions requirements are up to date.

Our used cars also come with a No Questions Asked Return Policy. If you think a used SUV would be better than the sedan you drove home, bring it back to our dealership within three days or 300 miles, and we’ll give you a full refund.
